Do You See the Light?

This Sunday, I’m going to be leading our church through a study on John 9. This is the passage where Jesus heals a man born blind. It’s truly an incredible passage of Scripture. I’m not really going to expound on it too much here…because some of the church-folk that read this blog might decide that they’ve already heard it and won’t come to worship on Sunday!

This morning, I’ve been thinking how we’re all a little blind at times. Some of us need Jesus to tell us to go and wash the mud from our eyes in order to truly see what He’s trying to accomplish in this world.

There are moments in the church when we get so caught up in thinking about how things used to be that we fail to see what God is trying to do today. We are tempted to look back and fondly recall “the good old days” when every thing was great. We just want things to be the way they were. But, God seems to be calling us to move forward.

I heard T.D. Jakes talk about how God is a moving God and that He desires for His people to move with Him. I believe that’s a pretty solid statement. If you look throughout the history of our faith, it’s this love story of God moving His people from where they were to where He desires them to be. God is continually calling us from where we’re at to the places He desires us to be. It’s this ongoing process of being shaped more and more into the people He originally intended us to be.

If we sit still and try to keep things as they’ve always been, we will miss the next move God is calling us to.

Have you ever smelled stagnant water? It’s disgusting. Why? Because it’s not moving…it’s just sitting there, collecting all this junk. It gets dirty, infested with disease and bugs. Stagnant water is to be avoided.

It’s my considered opinion that the church and believers can become just like that stagnant water when we fail to move with God. When we stop looking forward to the next place God is calling us to, we begin to get dirty, to smell, and get infested with all sorts of disease. And so, people outside the church begin to avoid us.

I believe it’s time for the Church and believers everywhere to clean some of the dirt out of their eyes. We need to be able to clearly see what God is calling us to…and then actually do it.
